the tcp/ip bindings weren't correct for the d-link ethernet adapter that we installed. there was an adapter installed, but no adapter with a tcp stack set up. removing and reinstalling didn't work. moving to a different pci slot didn't work. reinstalling the software didn't work. i get the word that i have to do a protocol rip and that he's going to talk to an engineer, and then i was put on hold and kicked back to the "hello. for help, press 1." revert back to the crap usb modem that's not supposed to work in windows 2000 but we rigged it to. drivers are incompatible. use newer drivers we had the foresight to save before we started. install rest of software. watch it die. uninstall software. watch modem not work any more. uninstall/reinstall modem several times. reinstall software. finally, success (and back to where we were when we started).
and i'll be damned if the third glance and wave didn't make my whole night.
